In the sprawling urban centers of India, medical help is often just a phone call away. But imagine living in a village perched on a rugged mountain slope near the border, or nestled deep in a marshland where roads dissolve into mud tracks. Here, the nearest Primary Health Centre (PHC) can be a day’s arduous trek away. – India’s Remote Frontiers
For millions in remote India, the distance to a doctor is not measured in kilometers, but in time and suffering. A simple fever can turn fatal; a complicated pregnancy becomes a life-or-death gamble.
At Kalyaan Trust, we believe that geography should not determine a person’s right to health. If the patient cannot come to the hospital, the hospital must go to the patient. This is the philosophy behind our initiative, ‘Chikitsa Yaan’ (Medical Vehicle).
The Silent Crisis at the ‘Last Mile’
Healthcare in India’s border and tribal belts faces a triple challenge of Accessibility, Availability, and Affordability.
- Inaccessible Terrain: Lack of all-weather roads makes it impossible for regular ambulances to reach many villages.
- Doctor Shortage: Rural health infrastructure is chronically understaffed, with few specialists willing to serve in difficult zones.
- Preventable Suffering: Due to lack of timely care, minor ailments escalate into chronic conditions, and maternal and infant mortality rates remain distressingly high.
‘Chikitsa Yaan’: A Hospital That Travels to You
Kalyaan Trust’s Chikitsa Yaan is not just a van; it is a lifeline on wheels. It is a fully equipped Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) designed to tackle primary healthcare needs right at the doorstep of the most vulnerable. (India’s Remote Frontiers)
What Does a ‘Chikitsa Yaan’ Do?
- Doorstep Diagnosis & Treatment: Each van is staffed with a qualified doctor, a nurse, and a lab technician. They conduct on-the-spot tests for blood sugar, hemoglobin, malaria, and more, providing immediate diagnosis and free essential medicines.
- Maternal & Child Health Shield: In remote areas, many women go through their entire pregnancy without a single check-up. Our vans are equipped with portable ultrasound machines and fetal Dopplers to ensure safe motherhood. We also focus on immunization for infants.
- Tele-Medicine Link: For complex cases, our vans serve as a digital bridge. Using satellite or mobile connectivity, village patients consult with specialist doctors in cities via video conferencing, getting expert advice without the cost and pain of travel.
A Story of Hope: Saving Geeta’s Child
A testimony from a border village in Uttarakhand.
Geeta Devi, eight months pregnant, lives in a village that gets cut off by snow in winters. She had never seen a doctor during her pregnancy. When the Kalyaan Trust Chikitsa Yaan conducted a camp nearby, her husband carried her on a makeshift palanquin to reach the van.
The on-board doctor, using the portable ultrasound, detected a critical complication that required immediate attention. They were rushed to the district hospital in the van itself. A healthy baby boy was born two days later. “That van didn’t just bring medicines,” Geeta’s husband says with tears in his eyes, “it brought life.”
Fuel the Journey to Health
Every trip a Chikitsa Yaan makes is a potential life saved. But these journeys are expensive—fuel for rugged terrain, salaries for medical staff, and restocking medicines require constant support.
Your contribution to Kalyaan Trust can keep these wheels of hope turning.
- Sponsor a ‘Health Camp’: Cover the cost of a one-day camp in a remote village, serving 100+ patients.
- Donate a ‘Safe Motherhood Kit’: Fund the antenatal check-ups and nutritional supplements for a pregnant woman.
- CSR Partnership: Corporations can adopt a Chikitsa Yaan van for a year, making a tangible impact on rural health indicators.
Let’s ensure no one is too far to be cared for. Help us drive health to the last mile.
